GitHub Models retires on 30 July 2026

GitHub is shutting down the Models playground, model catalogue, inference API and bring-your-own-key endpoints, requiring users to move inference workloads elsewhere.

Evidence boundary: GitHub Copilot is explicitly outside this retirement. The affected product is GitHub Models.

What changes

The hosted playground, model discovery catalogue, inference API and BYOK endpoints become unavailable after the retirement date.

Who is affected

  • Developers testing models in the GitHub Models playground.
  • Applications calling the GitHub Models inference API.
  • Teams using BYOK endpoints or catalogue-based model discovery.

Timeline

GitHub announced the final shutdown for 30 July 2026.

Required action

  • Identify code and automation calling GitHub Models endpoints.
  • Select an external inference provider or another supported platform.
  • Migrate model identifiers, request formats and operational monitoring.

What is not affected

GitHub Copilot continues separately. This record does not imply a wider retirement of GitHub's AI-assisted development products.

PlatformTrace analysis

This is a complete service retirement rather than a version upgrade: integrations that are not moved will lose their inference endpoint.
