What changes
Data Catalog is entering shutdown and users must move metadata discovery, tagging and governance processes to Knowledge Catalog or other supported Dataplex capabilities.
Who is affected
- Teams using Data Catalog APIs, tags and search workflows.
- Governance automation built around Data Catalog resources.
- Applications and reports that reference Data Catalog-specific identifiers or interfaces.
Timeline
The phased shutdown began on 1 June 2026. Individual restrictions and capability transitions may occur in stages rather than as one instant cutover.
Required action
- Inventory Data Catalog assets, APIs and tag templates.
- Map required capabilities to Knowledge Catalog and supported Dataplex services.
- Migrate metadata, permissions and automation.
- Test discovery and governance workflows before later shutdown stages.
What is not affected
This record does not claim that Dataplex, BigQuery metadata or every Google Cloud governance capability is being removed.
PlatformTrace analysis
The phased structure matters: customers can experience restrictions before the final service disappears, so migration readiness should not be tied only to a presumed final date.
